Bursa

Unlock the beauty of Ottoman style and charm with a trip to Bursa.

This fascinating city combines historical sites and thermal springs in city with skiing on the slopes of Uludag. It was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, and this rich history is evident as you walk around the new modern and industrial Bursa, which is built around ancient mosques and mausoleums. Culture vultures should check out the famous Muradiye Complex, which is set in a shady park and houses 13 imperial tombs. A number of these are exquisitely decorated with tiles, painted calligraphy and inlaid woodcarving.
Another must-see site is Ulu Camii. This enormous Seljuk-style shrine is Bursa's most dominant mosque. Sultan Beyaz─▒t I built it in a monumental compromise – having pledged to build 20 mosques after defeating the Crusaders in the Battle of Nicopolis, he settled for one mosque, with 20 small domes. For some fresh air after pounding the markets, then head to the nearby soaring peaks of Mt Uludag, which is Turkey's premier ski resort. Along the way, it is also worth visiting Cekirge's thermal hammams if you fancy a bit of rest and relaxation.
